Apocalypse, The End of The World, and Disaster.

What is the Apocalypse?

According to the Bible, the Apocalypse is the complete final destruction of the world, as described in the book of Revelation.
As a general word, unrelated to the Bible, the Apocalypse means an event involving destruction or damage on a catastrophic scale.
The Apocalypse is the last verse in the Bible, and in Russian Orthodox churches priests consider it wrong for someone to read it ou in the church as it is believed that it is for god only to decide when it must happen, and before Apocalipsys comes and destroys the world a series of events happens, from earthquakes to wars and separations between people.

From the film made after George Orwell’s 1984.

DISCLAIMER: everything said in the next paragraph is based on the knowledge I was able to gather from the media, from doctors I know and from people around me. A lot of this is my opinion, and I am in no way suggesting that all of the information is 100 percent accurate, but it is what I understood from the media.

The events that happened since the beginning of this year may be considered an Apocalypse of some sort. Like the fires in Australia that destroyed massive amounts of land, people had to leave their homes and save animals, this affected the world and is considered a catastrophe. Then the US almost started WW3, which, as said in the Bible, is preceding the Apocalypse. Now, the world is breaking apart due to the Coronavirus, which caused about 5,400 deaths and has almost 150,000 confirmed cases worldwide (march 13, 20:10 GMT).

The reason I am bringing up the Virus is that it seems to be the real Apocalypse of this generation, by precaution, world leaders have been pushed to make the decision to close all schools, cancel all significant events, as well as put whole countries in quarantine by closing borders. People are scared and don’t know what to believe and who to trust, they are as much informed by the media as confused.

What does “Dystopia” mean?

Dystopia is an imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice, typically one that is totalitarian or post-apocalyptic.

The reason why I got really interested by Dystopia in general is because in middle school a book that marked me was 1984 by George Orwell, and recently i watched the film about it again and realised how much some of the ideas in the book translate directly to some aspects of today’s society and some conspiracies concerning the goverment. This book is also the perfect example of a Dystopian world.

I did some research on films, and other creative sources on the topics of Dystopia and Apocalypse. Here are a list of Films I saw or were recommended to me by my peers:

Work by Matthew Barney.

GONE – Michael Grant
FAHRENHEIT 451 – Ray Bradbury
BRAVE NEW WORLD – Aldous Huxley
THE CIRCLE – Dave Eggers
NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR – George Orwell
A CLOCKWORK ORANGE – Anthony Burgess

One that stood out to me was the series “Chernobyl” made by Craig Mazin, produced by HBO, and filmed in Ukraine. The series revolves around the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of April 1986 and the cleanup efforts that followed.

The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident that happened on Saturday 26 April 1986. It all took place near the city of Pripyat in the north of the Ukranian USSR. It is considered the worst nuclear disaster in history and is one of only two nuclear energy disasters rated at seven—the maximum severity, the other being the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan.

Together, the explosions released 400 times as much radioactive fallout as the bomb the US dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.

More Detailed: The day of the incident, operators came to test the equipment at the power plant, the incident was caused because while they were running electric tests, on their 4th attempt, the power unexpectedly dropped to almost zero, which shouldnt have happened. This put the power reactors to a possibly unstable condition, the risk of this happening was not included in the operators instructions guide, so they proceeded with tests and upon test completion, the operators triggered a reactor shutdown, but a combination of unstable conditions and reactor design flaws caused an uncontrolled reaction, vapourising superheated cooling water, followed by a steam explosion. This was immediately followed by a fire that released a large amount of radiation for about nine days.

On May 4th, 3 Brave men, power plant workers, volunteered to go into the basement of the power plant, which was dark and filled with radioactive water, to turn off the valves of the powerplant and shut it from releasing any more radiation. This meant they would be at the heart of all radiation and their chances of survival were slim. The officals promised them that if they died their families would be well taken care of. This mission was seen to be the “suicide mission”.The heroes managed to stop the radiation from spreading and as a miracle one of the men is believed to be still alive and working, and the two other are believed to have lived until about 2015.

The reason why I got so interested in this is because to me it sounds like a story filled with sadness, horror, unfortunate events that still have an effect on people but also bravery. Without any disrespect, I find something about this story so mysterious, almost like a Hollywood Sci-Fi film.

My Point of Interest.

The key area that interests me is the connection between the real world to a paralell universe distopia and what the similarities are. The thin line between Chernobyl being a disaster and a full Apocalypse of its own.

Further in this blog I want to do more research about:

What followed the disaster in terms of how people reacted to it, and their good or bad actions regarding it? If Chernobyl was not contained how would it impact my life, and in an alternative universe are there ways to adapt? Interview Family and Friends from Russia and Ukraine on the people they happened to know from Chernobyl, trying to find out more about the emotional and physical impacts.
